GOOD CAUSES
THIS MONTH’S GOOD CAUSE
COOL HAND FRANK highlights nonprofit organizations driven to make this world a better place.
Last month, COOL HAND FRANK spotlighted Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance. COOLER member Melissa W. brought to my attention another organization dedicated to fighting a different yet no less insidious cancer: cholangiocarcinoma (pronounced “koh-LAN-jee-oh-kar-sih-NOH-muh”; we know it’s not easy). According to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF), it is “a rare bile duct cancer of the liver” that affects roughly 10,000 people in the United States. Detection is often difficult until its advanced stage and by then the cancer is highly aggressive; last year, Mayo Clinic reported a bleak overall five-year survival rate of less than 10%.
Since its founding in 2006, CCF has been dedicated to four core values: patients first, collaboration (especially with health professionals and cancer researchers), urgency, and innovation. Because early cholangiocarcinoma detection can improve the chances of survival, knowing its risk factors and symptoms is vital. Its website provides robust resources for patients and caregivers. The best ways you can support its efforts are through its volunteer program, fundraisers, or donations.
Thank you, COOLER member Melissa W., for your request.
